A Monograph of Verticillium Section Prostrata
Authors
Abstract:
Section Prostrata of the genus Verticillium was introduced by GAMS (1971) to separate verticillium-like anamorphs of the Clavicipitaceae from other species of the genus that were known or supposed to have affinities with other families of the Hypocreales. Other sections of Verticillium were subsequently described by GAMS & VAN ZAAYEN (1982). MESSNER et al. (1996) showed that the most important plant pathogens of the genus, which still are most frequently investigated, have affinities with the Phyllachorales. Also the type species of the genus, Verticillium luteo-album (i.e. V. tenerum) has affinities with this order (ZARE et al. 2000 - part 1) and its connection with a ‘Nectria inventa’ teleomorph supposed by PETHYBRIDGE (1919) is erroneous (ZARE et al. 2004). The inclusion of these plant pathogens together with the unrelated, often valuable biocontrol organisms of sect. Prostrata in one and the same genus Verticillium is undesirable for both scientific and practical reasons. Plant-associated Verticillium species recently been studied using RFLPs of the ITS region, β-tubulin and mitochondrial DNA (ZARE 2003) and ITS sequences (BARBARA & CLEWES 2003).

A REVISION OF PLANT-ASSOCIATED VERTICILLIUM SPECIES
Molecular approaches were used to re-evaluate the morphological criteria used to identify plant-associated Verticillium species. ITS-RFLPs divided the 31 studied strains of seven Verticillium species, (including the type species V. luteo-album) into four clusters. Cluster one comprised strains of the type species, V. luteo-album, cluster two V. albo-atrum, V. dahliae, V. nubilum and V. tricorpu...

One flavonoid, diosmetin (1), and two isoflavonoids, 3′-hydroxybiochanin A (2) and 3′-O-methylorobol (3), were isolated from the methanol extract of Eclipta prostrata L. by a bioactivity-guided fractionation technique using primary cultures of mouse osteoblasts as an in vitro assay system. All three compounds significantly increased osteoblast differentiation as assessed by the alkaline phospha...
full textPterostilbene Monograph
Introduction Pterostilbene is a chemical classified as a benzylidene compound (more specifically a stilbene) and is biologically classified as a phytoalexin, which are antimicrobial substances that are part of the plant’s defense system and are synthesized in response to pathogen infection. This monograph focuses on trans-pterostilbene. Stilbenes are low molecular weight (approximately 200-300 ...

Introduction Policosanol, an extract from sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum L.), has been heavily researched in Cuba in several human populations for its cholesterol-lowering properties. In addition to improving serum lipids, policosanol reduces LDL oxidation, decreases platelet aggregation, decreases smooth muscle proliferation, and improves symptoms of cardiovascular disease. Side effects are...

T o m a t o products, including ketchup, tomato juice, and pizza sauce, are the richest sources of lycopene in the U.S. diet, accounting for greater than 80 percent of the total lycopene intake of Americans. In addition to tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum) and tomato-based products, lycopene is also found in watermelon, papaya, pink grapefruit, and pink guava. Lycopene from both processed and ...

Introduction Melatonin, the primary hormone of the pineal gland, acts as a powerful “chronobiotic,” maintaining normal circadian rhythms. In patients with sleep disorders and altered circadian rhythms, such as occur in jet lag, night shift work, and various neuropsychiatric disorders, oral administration of melatonin can provide the necessary resynchronization of those cycles, at dosages rangin...
